Etymology[edit]

Appears to be derived from Proto-Japonic *kuru (spin). The (ni) appears to be the usual adverbial particle.[1]

First cited in the Nihon Shoki of 720.[1]

Compare modern Japanese adverb くるくる (kurukuru, spinningly).
