     新(しん)天(てん)皇(のう)の即(そく)位(い)によって上(じょう)皇(こう)、上(じょう)皇(こう)后(ごう)となったご夫(ふ)妻(さい)は、今(こん)後(ご)は一(いっ)切(さい)の公(こう)務(む)から退(しりぞ)く。
     日(に)本(ほん)政(せい)府(ふ)が定(さだ)めた「上(じょう)皇(こう)」、「上(じょう)皇(こう)后(ごう)」の英(えい)語(ご)表(ひょう)記(き)はそれぞれ、「Emperor Emeritus」、「Empress Emerita」。

     From the new emperor’s enthronement the couple who are now jōkō and jōkōgō will withdraw completely from public duties.
     The Japanese government has determined that the English translations of ‘jōkō’ and ‘jōkōgō’ shall be ‘Emperor Emeritus’ and ‘Empress Emerita’ respectively.
