From Old Japanese 夜船 (yopune).[1] Found in the Man'yōshū of 759 CE.[2]

Analyzable as a compound of (yo, night) +‎ (fune, boat, ship).[1][3][4][5][6]

Also encountered as yobune.[1][3][4][5][6] The fune changes to bune as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
