Etymology[edit]

Compound of 燃え (moe, burning, the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb ()える (moeru, to burn, intransitive)) +‎ 上がる (agaru, to rise, to go up, intransitive; in reference to flames burning higher).[1][2][3][4][5]

First attested in 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari, The Tale of Genji) from the early 1000s.[1]
