A specialization of 雩 (OC *qʰʷla, *ɢʷla) by modification of 雨 (Chi, 2010).
Shuowen interprets it as an ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 宷 + 亏.

Related to the particles 曰 (OC *ɢʷad) and 越 (OC *ɢʷad). Smith (2012) proposes this to be derived from the prepositional phrase *于之 (OC *ɢʷa tjɯ).
