Etymology[edit]
The full name for the city is 阿倫阿爾山/阿伦阿尔山 (Ālún Ā'ěrshān), a transcription of Mongolian ᠬᠠᠯᠠᠭᠤᠨ
ᠷᠠᠰᠢᠶᠠᠨ (qalaɣun rasiyan, literally “hot holy water”).
The Mongolian name is composed of native ᠬᠠᠯᠠᠭᠤᠨ (qalaɣun, “hot”) + non-native ᠷᠠᠰᠢᠶᠠᠨ (rasiyan, “holy water, spring”). The latter, which corresponds to Chinese 阿爾山/阿尔山 (Ā'ěrshān), was loaned from Sanskrit रसायन (rasāyana, “elixir”).
