Etymology[edit]
From 雛 (hina-, diminutive prefix, carrying favorable connotations such as a sense of cuteness) + 罌粟 (keshi, “poppy”). The keshi changes to geshi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
- Papaver rhoeas, common poppy, corn poppy, field poppy
- 1927, 横光利一, 花園の思想[1], 青空文庫:
- またあの柔かな雛罌粟が壺にささって微風に赤々と揺らめくと、妻はかすかな歎声を洩して眺めていた。
- Mata ano yawaraka na hinageshi ga tsubo ni sasatte soyokaze ni akaaka to yurameku to, tsuma wa kasuka na tansei o morashite nagamete ita.
- Further, when the soft corn poppy stuck in the vase fluttered redly in the gentle breeze, his wife let out a faint sigh as she watched it.
- またあの柔かな雛罌粟が壺にささって微風に赤々と揺らめくと、妻はかすかな歎声を洩して眺めていた。
Usage notes[edit]
As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as ヒナゲシ.
