Appears to be a compound of (ba, horse) +‎ (su, raw material).[1][2]

The su element also appears in some references[1][3] as 馬尾 (su, horsehair, specifically from the tail), apparently deriving from , (su, latticework, matting, or netting in a strainer), as horsehair was often used to make this.
