Glyph origin[edit]
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *ŋaːw) : phonetic 敖 (OC *ŋaːw) + semantic 魚 (“fish”)
Etymology[edit]
Possibly a back-formation from 黿 (OC *ŋoːn, *ŋon, “large turtle”) with final -n discarded due to folk etymology (Schuessler, 2007).
