From Proto-Karen *thwiᴮ (dog) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *thwi² (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-kʷəj-n (dog). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ထွီႏ, S'gaw Karen ထွံၣ် (hṭweè), Western Pwo ထွံၪ.
