Etymology[edit]

Sino-Korean word from 建物, from (to construct) + (thing, object), an orthographic borrowing from Japanese (たて)(もの) (tatemono).[1]

    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
