Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 붇〮 (Yale: pwút).

From Old Chinese (OC *prud), an ancient pre-Sino-Korean borrowing (Lee and Ramsey 2011, p. 76). The Sino-Korean reading is (, pil). Compare Vietnamese bút and Vietnamese viết.
