First attested in the Neung'eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean 싀다〮 (Yale: sùy-tá).

Cognate with 쉬다 (swida, to go bad, to turn sour). Possibly related to Japanese (su, vinegar), 酸い (sui, sour).
