Etymology[edit]

Nativisation of the Sino-Korean term 우방 (牛蒡, ubang, “burdock”). First attested in 1489 as Middle Korean 우워ᇰ (Yale: wuweng), from unattested intermediary form *우ᄫᅯᇰ (Yale: *wuWeng).
