Etymology[edit]
Sino-Korean word from 이북(以北) (ibuk, “to the north”) + 오(五) (o, “five”) + 도(道) (do, “provinces”).

- Phonetic hangul: [이(ː)북 오(ː)도]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
