Etymology[edit]

From 이팝 (ipap, plain boiled rice) +‎ 나무 (namu, tree), due to the resemblance of the flowers to grains of white rice.

  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
