Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Magyeong chojip eonhae (馬經抄集諺解 / 마경초집언해), 16th century, as Early Modern Korean 죵아리 (Yale: cwong.ali); equivalent to 종(踵) (jong, heel) +‎ 아리 (-ari, suffix).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈt͡ɕo̞(ː)ŋa̠ɾi]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
