Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *an (so, then, well; whether), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂en (there, on the other hand). Cognate with Old English ono (if, well, then, now). Compare also Old High German inu, ino (well, yea, though, because, if, for example), Old Saxon inu (well, yea, because, namely), Old English eno (if, well, then, now).
