Gothic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “probably get some sources up in here, Lehmann has something to say on the subject too”)

Isolated in Gothic among the Germanic languages. Probably related to Proto-Germanic *tō somehow, but the exact etymology is unclear. If this is a non-Germanic loan in Gothic that was not transmitted through Proto-Germanic, its use would prove the existence of the verb *𐌲𐌹𐌽𐌽𐌰𐌽 (*ginnan) as simplex in Gothic (see 𐌳𐌿𐌲𐌹𐌽𐌽𐌰𐌽 (duginnan)).

It may be a rerendering of Germanic *tō after Celtic *dū < earlier *dō, its exact cognate. Likewise cf. Germanic *tiz-, rerendered to Latin or Celtic dis-/*dis-. Why these were rendered as non-Germanic cognates is uncertain.
