Gothic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
The first element is *πΏπ½ππΉπ»π (*untils, βunfittingβ), from πΏπ½- (un-) + *ππΉπ»π (*tils) (compare its attested antonym π²π°ππΉπ»π (gatils)). The second element is *πΌπ°π»ππΊπ (*malsks), a reflex of Proto-Germanic *malskaz (βhaughtyβ).
The etymology points to a connotation of recklessness induced by overestimation of one's own abilities.
