Gothic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From π†πŒ°πŒ³πŒ°π‚ (fadar, β€œfather”) +‎ -πŒ΄πŒΉπŒ½πƒ (-eins). The noun-forming suffix -πŒ΄πŒΉπŒ½πƒ (-eins) usually is attached to a verb, but there is no known verb from which this could've been derived, which makes this derivation slightly problematic.

Noun[edit]

π†πŒ°πŒ³π‚πŒ΄πŒΉπŒ½πƒ β€’ (fadreinsf

  1. (patri-)lineage, descent, kin

Declension[edit]

Only attested in the genitive singular. Based on other nouns ending in -eins, it is suspected to have followed the same i/ō-stem paradigm, but the lack of a source verb (see etymology) renders the supposed ō-stem forms conjectural; the attested form is of the i-stem part of the paradigm.
