From Proto-Indo-Iranian *saptátʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *septḿ̥-th₂o-s (seventh), from *septḿ̥ (seven). Cognate with Sanskrit सप्तथ (saptátha), Lithuanian septiñtas, Proto-Germanic *sebundô (whence English seventh).
