Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Arabic ـِيَّات (-iyyāt), feminine plural of the derivational suffix ـِيّ (-iyy), whence Maltese -i. Natively used with nouns in -ija, then probably first extended to Sicilian borrowings in -i and finally also to consonant-final borrowings.
