AVAS (countable and uncountable)

  1. (automotive) Initialism of acoustic vehicle alerting system: a system that emits vehicle warning sounds alerting pedestrians to the presence of electric vehicles.
    • 2021 February 4, Stephen Williams, “E.V.s Force Carmakers to Reinvent the Wheel, and Brakes, and Mirrors …”, in The New York Times[1]:
The coming Audi E-tron GT, for example, has control units that remix the sound effects based on the car’s speed or the position of the accelerator pedal. Also fitted to the Audi is an AVAS — an acoustic vehicle alerting system, required to alert pedestrians that an electric car is close by.
