First attested as alede in 1332. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from an ancient tree or plant name (compare Old Norse alað (food, meal), aldin (edible fruit of a tree), Old Swedish alda (fruit-bearing oak)). Compare Aalten and Eelde.
