Etymology[edit]
First attested as alkmade in 1182-1206. Compound of Old Dutch *alke (“mud”) or alk (“crow”) and made (“meadow”). The municipality was named after the van Alkemade family, which received its name from the territory it ruled. Compare Alkmaar.
