Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as alfene in 1144. Etymology uncertain. Potentially of non-Germanic origin. The toponym might be derived from a prehistoric hydronym *Albhanô- ("the white one"). The identifier aan de Maas translates to "on the Meuse".
