German[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Principally from altertümeln + -er. In the rare sense directly from Altertum + -ler, but with possible disparaging allusion to the former (which makes it difficult to separate them).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Altertümler m (strong, genitive Altertümlers, plural Altertümler, feminine Altertümlerin)
- someone who imitates the past, an archaizer
- (rare, mostly either derogatory or erroneous) a scholar of the antiquities (ancient history), an antiquarian
- Synonyms: Altgeschichtler, Altertumskundler, Altertumsforscher
