Meanings[edit]

What does "CFI" stand for? And, for that matter, can someone define "idiomatic" for me, as it is used here? Thanks.Ohms law 00:30, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

CFI stands for Criteria for Inclusion (aka WT:CFI). Idiomatic is defined in CFI. --Yair rand 21:32, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, thank you.Ohms law 00:48, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Google hits[edit]

I see "but numbers of Google hits are one indicator of commonality." at the bottom of the intro here, and it worries me. Google is great, I use it constantly, but it's generally a terrible resource to use for looking up words, especially common words (or phrases, for that matter). People around the rest of the web tend not to be linguists, and so they take it for granted that most common words and phrases are understood and therefore need no explaination. Even real neologisms are rarely explained by the users themselves...

Not that I'm criticizing the idea of this page/Appendix itself (this seems like a good idea, to me), I'm just wondering, what are the inclusion criteria here on Wiktionary? There must be standard references that y'all refer to, aren't there?Ohms law 00:36, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Google hits are a decent indicator of how common a word or a phrase is. This has nothing to do with whether the people who use the word or phrase are linguists or not. --Dan Polansky 08:52, 8 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
