From a substrate language, from a hydronym *Awya, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₁- (“run”).[1] Compare Welsh awel (“wind”), from Proto-Celtic *awelā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₁eleh₂.
