Etymology[edit]
First attested as dat bakartlant in 1404. Compound of an unclear first element and land (“land, area”). The first element has been interpreted as a personal name Middle Dutch *Bakart or as a sub-compound derived from an unclear element and Middle Dutch aert (“farmland”).
