From Old Frisian biginn, bijenn, from Proto-Germanic *biginnaz (beginning), from Proto-Germanic *biginnaną (to begin). Cognate with West Frisian begjin (beginning), Dutch begin (beginning), German Low German Begünn (beginning), German Beginn (beginning).
