Etymology[edit]
First attested with certainty as beltrerem in 1316. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch *Belt (“a toponym”) and ham (“land formed of sediment located in the bend of a river”). The settlement or location contained in the first element of this etymology is otherwise unknown.
