Etymology[edit]

First attested as de slusa in 1294-1295. Compound of blauw (blue) (derived from the hydronym Blauwe Wetering) and sluis (lock, sluice). Compare Blauwe Sluis, Rode Sluis, Zwartsluis and Zwartsluisje.
