Etymology[edit]

From Malay boleh +‎ -land, where the root comes from the expression in Malay Malaysia Boleh (Malaysia can [do it]), ultimately from Malay boleh. The term was based on politicians using the previous phrase while failing to resolve various problems in Malaysian society.
