Etymology[edit]

From Maltese Buttiġieġ, from bu t-tiġieġ (the one with the chickens, literally chicken father), equivalent to Arabic أَبُو الدَجَاج (ʔabū ad-dajāj). Presumably referring originally to a poultry farmer.
