Etymology[edit]

From Middle Welsh Caerdyf. Equivalent to caer (fort) +‎ Taf ([River] Taff); literally "fortified city on the River Taff".

The change from final /v/ to /ð/ is a local pronunciation, postdating the name being borrowed into English.
