  1. (bacteriology) A taxonomic name component, usually forming an extended genus or species name, used as an interim status for a bacterium not yet cultured in a laboratory.

Usage notes[edit]

  • When used as part of the name for a candidate genus or species, it should appear in italics and the following elements in ordinary Roman type, for example "Candidatus Desulforudis audaxviator".
  • It is written Ca. when abbreviated.
