Old Norse masculine ija-stem nouns.

These nouns are masculine, typically with the following endings:

  • in the nominative singular: -ir;
  • in the genitive singular: -is or sometimes -ar;
  • in the nominative plural: -ar.

The stem classes are named from the perspective of Proto-Germanic and may not still be visible in Old Norse inflections. This class derives from Proto-Germanic a-stems ending in ij after a heavy root. As a result, the stem has i-umlaut throughout.
