Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German Tene, from Old High German *Teni, from Proto-Germanic *daniz. The modern D- is Central and Low German (Middle Low German Dēne), reinforced by Danish dansk, Danmark. These latter probably also caused the ä-spelling.
