Etymology[edit]

Attested in 1501 as 't Welreloo. A compound of the toponym Wel +‎ lo (light forest),[1] the second part comes from Proto-West Germanic *lauh, from Proto-Germanic *lauhaz, from Proto-Indo-European *lówkos (field, meadow). Compare Dutch Wellerlooi.
