Etymology[edit]

Originally a phonetic respelling of German Ebeje, with j mispronounced as if a German word, from Marshallese Ebeje, the older orthographic spelling of Epjā. Later on, re-pronounced as if an English word, leading to modern Marshallese Ibae.
