Etymology[edit]

Possibly from Middle English elson, alternative spelling of elsen, elsyn, alsene (“an awl or some other pointed instrument or tool”), either from Middle Dutch elsene, alsene, from Old Dutch *elisna, *alasna, from Proto-West Germanic *alisnu, *alasnu, from Proto-Germanic *alasnō, or from an unrecorded Old English form.

Particularly: “There are instances in Middle English where "elsen" is spelled "elson", such as in "trynkettus and tournyng-stonys and elson bladys, Colrakus and copstolus one gret whyle-barrous" on page 86 of the 1845 edition of Herkyn to my tale edited by T. Wright and J. O. Halliwell, but we lack a source linking such usage to the surname.”
