German[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Erpressung f (genitive Erpressung, plural Erpressungen)

  1. blackmail; coercion (the act, sometimes punishable, of forcing somebody to some behaviour by means of a threat)
Es ist reine Erpressung, wenn sie sagt, dass sie sich scheiden lässt, falls ich nicht mit ihr nach München ziehe.
It’s pure blackmail when she says that she’ll get a divorce if I don’t move to Munich with her.
  2. (law) extortion; blackmail (the crime of forcing monetary values from someone by means of a threat)

Usage notes[edit]

  • German law distinguishes between Erpressung in the above sense and Nötigung, which latter does not necessarily involve a monetary gain. It does not distinguish between threats of violence and other unlawful threats.
