13th century, from older Estevoo, from Old Galician-Portuguese Estevão, from Latin Stephanus, from Ancient Greek Στέφανος (Stéphanos), from στέφανος (stéphanos, crown). Cognate with Portuguese Estêvão, Spanish Esteban.
