Unknown. Possibly related to Welsh din (fort, stronghold), or to Dane.

  1. An area in Gloucestershire, between the rivers Severn and Wye, with a long history of mining.
  2. A local government district in Gloucestershire bordering onto Wales, formed in 1974 and with its headquarters in Coleford.
