English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the German Gaumer, which referred to a person who functioned as a moral censor or supervisor in an official capacity. The German surname is a derivative of the verb gaumen (to protect, to defend; to care for), a term now limited to Switzerland. This verb in turn comes from Middle High German goumen, from Old High German goumen, from Proto-Germanic *gaumijaną (to heed, notice, observe, keep). The verb is ultimately a cognate of the obsolete English verb yeme (to observe, to pay attention).
