Both Great and Little Welnetham were recorded as Hvelfiham in 1086 (DB) and Weluetham by 1170.

Great Welnetham

  1. A small village in Great Whelnetham parish, West Suffolk district, Suffolk, England, previously in St Edmundsbury district (OS grid ref TL8759).

Usage notes[edit]

The village and civil parish have slightly different spellings. This spelling is used for the village on Ordnance Survey maps, also in the "Dictionary of British Place Names" by A. D. Mills.
