Etymology[edit]
First attested as mydhusum in 1491. Calque of West Frisian Grut Midhuzen, derived from grut (“great, big”) and a compound of Old Frisian mid (“mid-, middle”) and the plural form of hūs (“house”). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein Medhuizen.
