Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as Groterwierum in 1529. Calque of West Frisian Greate Wierrum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian grāt (great, big) (from Proto-West Germanic *graut, from Proto-Germanic *grautaz) and the dative plural form of wier (artificial mound used for habitation) (probably related to *warjan (to ward off, defend, protect)). The element great was added to distinguish the settlement from Lutkewierum.
